Editor's Note Recents

April 2021

"If you've taken a bit of a break from study or job applications that's completely fine - alfresco dining was practically calling our names!"

Helena Nuttall

With the sun finally out, pubs open and increasing work commitments, it’s been a slightly quieter month on The Notable. I hope that along with considering career options you’ve all been out and enjoying the company of friends and family, after what has been a long and lonely winter for everyone! If you’ve taken a bit of a break from study or job applications that’s completely fine – alfresco dining was practically calling our names!

Books

The Notable’s book of the month was Klara And The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, our first fiction choice. Our review of the novel will be out next week -stay tuned!

Interviews

Gaby Mendes – Founder of Talk Twenties

“The benefit that 20-somethings have right now is that we’re so adaptable to change, we’re flexible.”

Gaby Mendes, Founder of Talk Twenties

Kirsty had the pleasure of interviewing Gaby Mendes, who founded a platform called Talk Twenties with the aim of providing people in their twenties with resources and information missed off our syllabus’ at school. Despite being rarely spoken about, post-graduate depression is more common than we may think, and Talk Twenties is there to dispel the myth that after university everything will miraculously fall into place. In her interview Gaby discusses her vision for Talk Twenties, how the pandemic will have impacted people in their twenties, and what success means to her. If you haven’t yet had a chance to read the interview, I recommend that you do!

Lifestyle

After discussions we’ve had about salaries; what to expect and how to (politely) negotiate them, I wrote a piece titled Are You Being Paid Fairly. I hope this will help you address a topic most of us initially find daunting. It doesn’t have to be awkward, and it is important to communicate your thoughts when necessary.

Wishing everybody a happy, sunny and productive May!
